Private Wojtek

Delighted to see that plans are forging ahead for a memorial in Edinburgh to one of World War II’s most extraordinary soldiers – Private Wojtek the Syrian brown bear.

He served alongside Polish soldiers, famously carrying ammunition to his human comrades at the battle of Monte Cassino. Like many of the Polish troops, Scotland  became his home after the war. He died in Edinburgh in 1963 and now the Scottish Government has given the Wojtek Memorial Trust a £20,000 funding boost.

Michael Czeredrecki, a paratrooper and tailor, recalled life with Wojtek in their Scottish billet where the friendly 6ft bear would wait by their tents for the return of his fellow soldiers. Read about Czeredrecki’s equally astonishing wartime exploits in his obituary – see Military Obituaries (A-Z) under Latest Obits at www.wonderfullife.org.uk
